A MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDERS

The Guadalupe Cultural Arts and Education Center is a dream come true for Margie and I. We have been involved in community grass roots issues over the years, about  40 years for that matter. In all those years we have met and worked with so many different peoples from many cultural backgrounds. It has been a lifetime of experiences that we feel should be shared with you and the community.

The history, culture, and the experiences of Guadalupe is the heart of this center. This is what this center represents, the love  the fiestas, picnics, and history of many people who came here in the early years to find a place in the sun for their families. No matter where you go you will always find honest hardworking people trying to make a living and live out their dreams. Thats what Guadalupe is about. The old values and traditions of the immigrants made Guadalupe what it is today.

The Chumash  were the first people who survived on this land for thousands of years, before the Europeans came. The Chumash villages of Atajes, Lospe, Nipomu, Ajuaps were some of the villages in the area where Guadalupe is today. In the early 1900's because of agriculture Guadalupe became a center for many immigrant farm workers. Guadalupe has gone through many transitions from Chumash village, to stage coach stop, then to an agri-business community. Today it still is a farm workers community. Because of the greatness of the diversity in it's history and cultural back ground we decided to build the Cultral Center to represent the roots of the town.

There are many heartfelt reasons why we chose to build this center in Guadalupe. Most of all we hope to house the cultures of the many people of our town, especially the children. Art work, artifacts, pictures, and books display the people who built the town from the beginning.

We invite all of you to come in and visit the center and perhaps you too will see an old memory in a picture, that will bring a smile to your face.
Margie and I think you will be surprised at the contents of this special place in your community. Thank you for your support.

Margie & Joe Talaugon
